Both i5-2500 and i5-2500K processors survive. The unlocked "K" version is more expensive.

The K version's multiplier can be overclocked until the processor itself goes unsettled. The non-K version can only be overclocked by 400

The "K" side (unlocked) CPU can be overclocked easily, the non "K" version can be, but just the Turbo... if your not familiar with getting at the CPU itself.

2500k has an unlocked multiplier and comes with a change one's mind stock cooler making it much easier to overclock, but yes any processor can be overclocked. With the 2500 you would increase the frequency as an alternative of the multiplier, and you MUST get a decent cooler

Just put, if you want to overclock, get the K version for $25 more or so

The 2500K has an unlocked multiplier while the 2500 doesn't. The i5 2500 may have a bit of overclocking headroom, but it is very reduced, and even moving the baseclock
